Double black Whiteface Mountain, NY
Slide 1 drops 1,194 vertical feet over 2,324 feet of skiing, with a steepest pitch of 43° about 1,180 feet below the top. That's steeper than 83% of the 2,251 double black runs we've measured in North America, and the 2nd steepest of 90 named runs at Whiteface Mountain. It faces east.
Facing east at an average 31°, Slide 1 gets about 97% of the winter sun that flat ground at Whiteface Mountain does, December through March. That's sunnier than 68% of the runs we've measured, and the 60th sunniest named run at Whiteface Mountain. Its top sits at 4,590 feet.
With little slope to hide behind, it takes nearly the full winter sun of open ground: powder settles and turns heavy sooner after a storm, and spring snow softens early. Shading from ridges and trees isn't counted yet.
