Double black (off-piste) A-Basin, CO
Lower Elephant's Trunk drops 818 vertical feet over 3,854 feet of skiing, with a steepest pitch of 33° about 10 feet below the top. That's steeper than 36% of the 2,251 double black runs we've measured in North America, and the 83rd steepest of 161 named runs at A-Basin. It faces southwest.
Facing southwest at an average 14°, Lower Elephant's Trunk gets about 133% of the winter sun that flat ground at A-Basin does, December through March. That's sunnier than 94% of the runs we've measured, and the 13th sunniest named run at A-Basin. Its top sits at 11,970 feet.
Angled toward the low winter sun, it bakes: powder turns heavy soon after a storm, and in spring it softens early in the day and refreezes hard overnight. Shading from ridges and trees isn't counted yet.
